This is the session every parent will keep close to their bedside or family display wall. I want you to enjoy this newborn session and remember it for all the years to come.
I hope these suggestions from myself and industry collegues will help you prepare, they are only suggestions so don't stress. Take care of you and baby, having your family happy and healthy comes first.
Let me know when the baby is delivered, It is best to do newborn photographs between 7 and 10 days following birth. This will allow me to keep space clear for your session.
Consider if you would like an at home session or in studio session.
If at home, ensure you have the room or house at a warm temparture to foster a comfortable and sleepy baby. Your baby will likely be naked for some of the session, they will get cold quickly if the temparture is too cool.
Bring a snack and water for yourself and any pets and siblings. The photoshoot can be long and tiring.
If siblings are coming, bring some entertainment for them.
Bring at least one change of clothing, just in case any accidents happen.
Bring everything for changing and feeding the baby, including any special creams and products you use.
If the newborn has hair, bring a brush.
Bring any props you would like to add into the photos.
If using the pacifier, bring that as well.
Two or three outfits
Props to consider: Wedding rings, fluffy blankets, knitted hats and socks, cute stuffed animals and toys, baskets with wide bases, scarves, even jewelry.
Parents or siblings should wear solid colors and avoid patterns so they do not catch the attention from the main subject – the baby.
If you are traveling to my studio, plan to feed your baby when you arrive. If I am coming to your home or an agreed location, please start feeding baby 30 minutes before our appointment.
There will be plenty of breaks for messes, feeding and cuddling. Newborns will need feeding breaks throughout the session, especially if they are a little fussy. Feeding times also allow us to capture intimate nursing moments between mommy and baby, if that is what you would like
Just remember to be patient and not worry when things go wrong. They often do, I plan for this and it’s the nature of baby photography.
Send me your ideas beforehand, While I have my own creative style, If you see something you like elsewhere, I will do my best to add some elements into your session. I am not offended if a client send me someone elses work as an idea.
Sit back and relax.
I am comfortable and confident in handling newborns, as is my associate. We take your baby's safety seriously. While you are welcome to become involved at any point, I will ensure i provide prompts when you are needed in the photos as a mom and/or family.
Congratulations, I am so happy for you and your family, and look forward to working with you on this very special addition.
